Tons and tons of gak that was, for whatever reason, never sent out to stores. We had some Kools that came with playing cards, coasters or poker chip sets. We had some promo Newports that came with free t-shirts, so I ended up with 20 free work t-shirts. That was the best deal I ever got off promo packs, but it wasn't the only one. I think when all was said and done, I ended up with around $10,000 in Camel Cash, which I used to buy a nice denim jacket with a sheepskin lining, a tent, a cooler, name-brand Zippos, ashtrays galore and lots of other shit. I not only got 30+ free cartons of cigarettes for my own use (so, $3000 in Camel Cash), I got cartons for my friends, too, on the condition that I got to keep the Camel Cash. Here's the kicker, and why I typed all this shit out: the free, "FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY" packs had $10 Camel Cash notes inside instead of the standard $1 notes! I could: a) buy the cartons as-is, for half price (since RJR paid for half the packs) or I could b) open the cartons, cut the piece of clear tape holding the BOGO packs together, put the "regular" cigarettes in the "to be returned to RJ Reynolds for credit" pile, and keep the "FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY" cigarettes for myself. After they sat there for a few weeks, I asked our "tobacco guy" about it, and he gave me two options. Since that was my brand, I was interested. So, one day we got a bunch of buy one, get one Camel filters in. More often than not, the promo cigarettes would sit there for weeks and weeks, and would eventually get tossed in the "to be returned to RJ Reynolds for credit" pile. Thing was, though, they almost never picked them up. He'd put tax stamps on them, as the law required, and then put them in a corner somewhere for RJ Reynolds' local sales guys to pick up to distribute to local stores. My dad would get several cases (30 cartons each, I think?) of these promo packs. You might not know that promotional packs of cigarettes back in the day (like buy one, get one free packs) used to come in plain white cartons. He was a wholesale grocer who sold a lot of cigarettes.
